![]() I will do a recording comparison another time, since that will take a lot longer. So this is a bit of a shootout based on playback sound quality only. I am now in a position to comment on how all of these decks compare playing back tapes made on a variety of machines. The last deck arrived a few days ago - a 682ZX in mint condition, but the heads were a little dirty and it is having trouble calibrating tapes, so I am currently using it for playback only, and it will probably go on a trip to the technician. In the last few weeks I have acquired a recently serviced Dragon as well as an ESL-serviced ZX-9 from another Tapeheads member (thanks, Angel). One of them had been fully overhauled by ESL, although ironically this one has now failed and is not functioning, so it will have to be serviced. Of course it was neither, but it spent six months with a local technician and now it is working perfectly and sounding excellent.Īround the same time I bought two CR-7s, both in mint condition and working perfectly. The first Nak was a ZX-7 in February, which was described on ebay as mint condition and fully functioning. ![]() I am in the fortunate position of having acquired all of these decks over the last year. “Nakamichi Dragon vs ZX-9 vs CR-7 vs ZX-7 vs 682ZX Newbie yes but not to tapes and tape decks, just because I am new here does not mean that I don’t know what I am talking about.įor the people that think the Dragon sounds better, well we will have to agree to disagree.ĭid you read the post by Rossb? A member on this site, if you did not read it here it is again Nakamichi Dragon vs ZX-9 vs CR-7 vs ZX-7 vs 682ZX I have been lurking around this site for years, but only joined recently. I could always get another, over here, where it is much easier. If I had a deck that met his requirements, I'd sell it to him, restored, for 1200 euro for sure. CR-7s on average do not go for much less, if at all than a Dragon, apples to apples, and Dragons are much easier to find than CR-7s. He knows that even after a few years, he would not lose much money, if any, if he decides to sel it, if it has that "pedigree". ![]() Justvinyl made a specific request for a late model in mint condition to minimize the chance of a less stellar one. There ARE many variations and tolerances within the many years these deck were made. 20+ decks of just those 2 models, so a reasonable sampling. But the best Dragon (even not counting Chris', which has had a ton of custom work done on it) I've heard bested the best CR-7. That said, the worst Dragon I've heard, after restoration, was not as "good" as the worst CR-7 I've worked on. CR-7s, when they work right, are indeed more consistent, on average, than a Dragon. The state of alignment, calibration, and the individual condition of a deck mean more than the model number. In 30 seconds I can make an RX-202 blow a Dragon away, but the Dragon will apear just fine. Any deck can sound "better" than any other deck. Yeah, this has been beat to death more times than I care to know.
